The Life Cycle of the Zimmerman Pine Moth

The life cylce of a Zimmerman Pine Moth completes in one year, typically involving two generations. In early spring, larvae emerge from hibernation sites beneath the bark of pine trees and begin feeding on the bark and branches, causing visible damage. Adult moths appear by late summer, laying eggs on the bark that hatch into larvae, continuing the cycle. The moth primarily affects and damages pine species, leading to weakened trees and increased susceptibility to other pests and diseases.

  • Moths emerge from in late August through September.
  • Eggs are laid on buds at the ends of branches and around wounds.
  • Larvae feed in fall before entering hibernation through winter.
  • In April, larvae resume feeding and burrow into bark and emerge
