What is Two-Lined Chestnut Borer (TLCB)?

Two-Lined Chestnut Borers are responsible for killing Oak Trees all over Minnesota. The small black beetles will target stressed Oak Trees and burrow into the bark of the tree, dig tunnels, and lay eggs. Over time the eggs hatch, and the tunnels get deeper into the tree, allowing for the insects to feed off the nutrients and water from inside the tree. In most cases, it takes 2-3 years for an Oak Tree to die from TLCB, but it can only take one year in some cases.

How to manage the spread of Two-Lined Chestnut Borer:

Trees need to be protected with insecticides when two-line chestnut borer (TLCB) populations are abundant enough in an area to cause significant damage in the next year or two. Infected trees require a special TLCB treatment done by a local arborist multiple times per year. L and T Tree Services provides inspection and treatment options. Two-Lined Chestnut Borer is present in the following Minnesota Counties:

  • Carver
  • Scott
  • Hennepin
  • Sibley
  • Dakota
  • Ramsey Counties

What Are The Symptoms Of Two-Lined Chestnut Borer?

TLCB are small black beetles, about ½ inch in size, that have yellow stripes down their back. The larvae are larger, legless white worm-looking insects that live underneath the bark in the tunnels dug by the beetle. Given that the beetles are typically underneath the bark, here are key signs to look for:

  • Tiny holes or complete splitting of bark
  • Tunnels underneath bark with holes shaped like a “D” from the beetles exiting
  • Wilted leaves or reduced foliage during late summer
  • Brown or dead leaves at the top of the tree, but the leaves on the lower section remain green
