What is Emerald Ash Borer?
The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Beetle came to the United States from Asia in 2002 and is now present in over half of the states. It is an insect responsible for killing tens of millions of ash trees since its arrival. They kill trees by burrowing underneath the bark and creating tunnels. Over time, the tree will no longer be able to transport nutrients and water causing it to die. Have your ash trees been marked by the city? What does Emerald Ash Borer look like?
These harmful beetles are emerald green and about ½ inch long as an adult. The larva is a white, worm-looking insect that lives inside the tree. You typically will not see them as they live underneath the bark, so keep an eye on your trees for the following symptoms:
- Tiny holes or complete splitting of bark
- Tunnels underneath bark with holes shaped like a “D” from the beetles exiting
- Tree suckers or “shoots” growing at the trunk
- Thinning or entirely bare tree canopy
- Increased woodpecker presence or tree damage

How to mitigate EAB:
Trees need to be protected with insecticides when emerald ash borer (EAB) populations are abundant enough in an area to cause significant damage in the next year or two. Infected trees require a special EAB treatment done by a local arborist. L and T Tree Services provides inspection and treatment options for emerald ash borer.
- Rapidly wilting leaves, typically starting at the top of the tree and working its way down
- Leaves are turning a discolored brown
- Leaves are quickly falling off the tree
- Underneath the bark of the tree, there may be a blue stain on the wood
EAB is present in the following Minnesota Counties:
- Carver
- Scott
- Hennepin
- Sibley
- Dakota
- Ramsey
